Gordes is listed among the most beautiful villages in France, and any visitor understands why from the first bend of the D2: the silhouette of the hilltop village, its golden stone walls that seem to grow from the rock. But beyond the postcard, Gordes is earned. Here's what we recommend to our guests.

The village — absolute must

Gordes Château

Built in the 12th century and remodelled during the Renaissance, the château dominates the square. It now hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events. The forecourt offers one of the most beautiful viewpoints over the Luberon valley.

Calades and alleys

Get lost on purpose. The calades (stepped paved alleys) descend toward the old ramparts. The most beautiful are around Rue de la Fontaine Basse and Chemin de la Combe.

Palais Saint-Firmin Caves

2 km from Gordes (5 min walk from Le Clos de Manon), these troglodyte caves carved into the rock served the population from the 11th to 18th century. A 30-min visit, fascinating for understanding daily life of the past.

Around the village

The Bories Village

3 km from Le Clos de Manon. A preserved ensemble of 20 dry-stone huts, a unique testament to Luberon vernacular architecture. The bories were used as seasonal dwellings and sheepfolds until the 19th century. Visit: 1 hour.

Sénanque Abbey

4 km, 8 min drive. One of the most beautiful Cistercian abbeys in France. In June-July, the surrounding lavender fields create the most photographed scene in Provence. Guided tour recommended.

Markets and favourite addresses

Tuesday morning market

Place du Château, 8 am - 1 pm. Picturesque and colourful. Olive oil from Maussane, lavender honey, tapenades, goat cheeses, Provençal fabrics. A ritual not to be missed.

How long to plan?

To visit Gordes in depth: 1 to 2 days are enough. However, we recommend a 5 to 7 night stay to radiate through the Luberon (Roussillon, Lacoste, Ménerbes, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Vaison-la-Romaine). It's the ideal format our Le Clos de Manon stays offer.
